TIP 1

DIFFERENT SIZES FOR DIFFERENT PURPOSES

Traditionally, Furoshiki cloths come in various sizes. Each of them even has a special name! Can you guess why there are different sized cloth? …… The answer is straightforward as you may have guessed - it is for wrapping different size objects.

TIP 2

NAMES FOR DIFFERENT SIZE FUROSHIKI

For the 17” (~45cm) Furoshiki, the one we are working on here, it’s called Chuhaba in Japanese. There are a total of 10 standard Furoshiki sizes, and an additional size, which was recently adopted and named after the English word “handkerchief”.
17” (~45cm) – Chuhaba 中巾
18” (~48cm) – Chief チ一フ
20” (~52cm) – Shakuyonhaba 尺四巾
27” (~68cm) – Futahaba 二巾
29” (~74cm) – Nisyakuhaba 二尺巾
35” (~90cm) – Nishihaba 二四巾
41” (~105cm) – Mihaba 三巾
50” (~128cm) – Yohaba 四巾
69” (~175cm) – Itsuhaba 五巾
77” (~195cm) – Muhaba 六巾
90” (~230cm) – Nanahaba 七巾

TIP 3

HOW TO DECIDE WHICH SIZE TO USE

I get asked a lot how to pick the right size Furoshiki. In fact, there’s a standard formula the Japanese uses. You will want the diagonal length of the cloth be 3 times the longest length of the object you plan to wrap.

TIP 4

A GREAT THING ABOUT FUROSHIKI

What’s great about Furoshiki wrapping is that you can redo your wrap or knot if it doesn’t look nice, unlike wrapping paper – once there’s a fold, it will leave a permanent crease mark, but for fabric you can iron out the crease.
